Celebrate Groundhog Day with the Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo to Celebrate Groundhog Guinea Hog Day

Groundhog Day 2011 will become Guinea Hog Day at the Houston Zoo on Wednesday, Feb. 2, when two of the newest residents of the John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo, Guinea hogs Penelope and Olivia make their winter weather prediction.

At 11 a.m. Penelope and Olivia will emerge from the McGovern Children’s Zoo ‘bat cave’ and will make their Guinea Hog Day weather prediction by choosing between two spherical objects – one representing 6 more weeks of winter and the other representing the onset of spring.  After making their choice, Penelope and Olivia will explain their prediction to their keepers who will provide an interpretation.  Yes, their keepers speak fluent Guinea Hog.

Why Guinea hogs? Well, it’s simple, actually.  The Houston Zoo doesn’t have a groundhog.  Groundhogs don’t like the hot and humid tropical climate that we have along the southeast Texas Gulf coast.  But the Houston Zoo believes their Guinea hogs, Penelope and Olivia, are naturals for predicting future weather patterns on February 2 due to their intelligence and adaptability.  Their keepers consider all hogs and pigs to be highly intelligent animals and quick learners with a substantial memory.  In fact, Guinea hogs can thrive in a wide array of environments, from deserts to mountainous terrain.

Originally from the Guinea coast of Africa, Guinea hogs spread to Europe and then the New World where they became a favorite of homesteaders in the American South.  Guinea hogs are considered a rare breed today.

What's in a Name?
1/13/2011 11:52:07 AM

Name Fort Bend's Newest Middle School

The Fort Bend Independent School District is seeking community suggestions for naming Middle School #14 that will open next school year in August 2011. The new middle school campus is located at 700 Plantation Drive in Richmond near the intersection of Harlem Road and Plantation.

Nominations of names for Middle School #14 must be written and submitted in a brief one or two paragraph statement that contains biographical/historical data and reasons justifying the suggested name. Names nominated shall generally be names for persons or places. If a person, the individual should have attained prominence locally or nationally, and have made significant contribution to society. If a place, the name should include historical relevance. Typically, the district no longer names schools after planned communities and/or subdivisions due to the fact that in many instances, students may attend a campus from several surrounding neighborhoods and subdivisions.

Suggested names for Middle School #14 should be submitted to the office of Lance Hindt, Assistant Superintendent for Middle School, 16431 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77479. Nominations may also be faxed to 281.634.1702, or emailed to brenda.melton@fortbendisd.com. After the principal is named for Middle School #14 in the early part of 2011, the new principal will coordinate a school naming committee.

The deadline to submit names is February 11, 2011.
